Meet Rob Vaz — a Kiwi-born fly fishing guide whose passion for angling is matched only by his love for people and the outdoors. Based in the Central North Island of Aotearoa, Rob offers far more than just a day on the water. His trips are immersive angling experiences filled with expert guidance, good humor, and meaningful connection.

With over 20 years of guiding experience, Rob has represented New Zealand competitively for more than 15 years. After becoming the 2003 National Fly Fishing Champion, he went on to compete internationally, representing his country at World Championships in Slovakia and Slovenia, as well as Commonwealth and Oceania Championships in Scotland, Tasmania, and New Zealand. More recently, his travels have taken him to Mongolia, Iceland, and beyond, bringing fresh knowledge and global perspective back to his guiding.

At the heart of Rob’s guiding philosophy is creativity and expression. He draws inspiration from art, music, photography, and writing — all of which shape the unique experience he offers on the water. A published writer in leading fly fishing magazines both locally and internationally, Rob also has a background in graphic design. In his spare time, he enjoys landscape painting, playing guitar, and spending time with his family.

Rob’s interests extend beyond fishing. He has represented Waikato in field hockey and is a capable cricketer. He also holds a diploma in intercultural studies and has worked with the New Zealand Red Cross, supporting former refugees and Māori youth.

Above all, Rob values connection. He delights in meeting people from all walks of life, sharing the beauty of Aotearoa, and creating a space where guests can unwind, reflect, and reconnect — whether that’s enjoying a break from the office or having someone who will simply listen.
