New Zealand Fly Fishing Report – A Promising Start to the Season
The new season has started well, with conditions pointing towards what could be a fantastic season for sight fishing and dry-fly enthusiasts. With El Niño influencing the outlook, I’m anticipating periods of lower river levels and clearer water — conditions that can make for some exciting, technical trout fishing.
So far, I’ve enjoyed a great mix of guiding, personal fishing and time on the water with friends, making the most of every opportunity. Recent backcountry trips have taken me from the East Coast to remote rivers and the surrounding hills just half an hour from Tūrangi.
It’s been rewarding to share some excellent fishing with clients, with happy anglers and some beautiful specimen trout making for memorable days on the water. Away from guiding, I’ve also enjoyed catching up with fishing friends, exploring familiar water and discovering opportunities to make the most of the early-season conditions.
For me, that balance is a big part of what makes a new season special. Whether guiding clients, fishing with good friends or heading out on my own, there’s always something to learn and another piece of water worth exploring.
If the season continues in this direction, there could be plenty to look forward to — clear water, challenging sight-fishing opportunities and the prospect of some excellent dry-fly fishing across the Central North Island.
As always, the fishery decides. River levels, water clarity and weather conditions will ultimately determine the best approach, and adapting to those changes is all part of the challenge and enjoyment of fly fishing in New Zealand.
I’m looking forward to seeing what the coming months bring and making the most of every opportunity on the water.
